What you will need:
1”x2”x6’ for the shelf
1”x8”x6’ for the shelf
2”x2”x6’ for mounting
1 ¼” wood screws
2 ½” wood screws
Stud Finder
Drill or Driver
Wood Glue
Mitre Saw (Skill Saw, or Hand Saw will work as well)
STEP 1
cut the 1”X8” into 2 pieces @ 24” used as the shelf

STEP 2
cut 1 of the 1x2 pieces to 24” for the front and 2 pieces for the sides at 6 ½”

STEP 3
Use a coat of wood glue to hold the pieces together. Then drill pilot holes through the longer piece through the shorter pieces.

STEP 4
Using 1 ¼” screws, screw together these pieces using a drill or driver

Now the frame is put together.
STEP 5
Take the 2 (1x8) pieces we cut @ 24”, make your pilot holes, and drill those to the top and bottom of the frame
You should now have a hollow box with one end open. This is key to having that “floating” effect.

Next, we will build the mounting bracket. (4 pieces)
STEP 6
Cut 3 of the 2x2 pieces @ 5”
STEP 7
Cut the final piece at 22 ½”

STEP 8
With the 22 ½” laying flat, you will need to place 2 of the 5” pieces at each end of the plank, and the final piece in the center of the 22 ½” plank using wood glue to hold them in place.
STEP 9
First drill your pilot holes, then screw these pieces together again with the 1 ¼” wood screws.
Now you have completed the mounting bracket!
Note: if you would like to paint your shelf, now would be the perfect time to paint it before we continue to the mounting process
When attaching this to the wall, it is best to find a stud to screw them into for stability, or using some drywall anchors. This will prevent the shelf being ripped from the wall.
STEP 10
After finding a stud or using the anchors, use the 2 ½” wood screws to screw the mounting bracket into the wall

STEP 11
Once the mounting bracket is attached, you will be able to slide the shelf we built earlier right into place.
