Living near the lake or in the woods can be a beautiful place to live and raise your kids. The only downside to this is the creepy crawlies that dwell inside the woods.
Cockroaches (AKA ‘Roaches’) are some gruesome insects. Sometimes even hard to get rid of. If the whole world turned into a Radioactive wasteland, the roaches would still be running rampant…
Or so we think.
What Are Cockroaches?
There are over 4500 different species of cockroaches, all coming from different parts of the world.
They have a reddish brown exoskeleton about 2 inches long, 2 long antennae, and in some cases wings that can expand up to 4 inches. Although most aren’t very good flyers, there’s no way I’m letting one fly at me!
Roaches typically live outdoors in a warm and humid climate, or inside in dark heated areas. Their diet consists of food, paper, clothing, and even dead insects! These disease ridden insects tend to cause more damage than they consume.
Did You Know?
‘Cockroach’ is derived from the Spanish word ‘cucaracha’
Sourcing the Nest
Now that we understand these Invasive Insects, we can now begin the process of their extermination. Begin by searching your home to find where the roaches are nesting. Look for signs of droppings, eggs, or of course activity of them scurrying around. This will help you narrow down the areas of attack. The main areas you need to focus on are going to be the Kitchens and Bathrooms of your home. Since these areas have the most warmth, moisture and food, they are going to be the main areas the Roaches infest.
Step 1: Inspection
Cockroaches don’t just magically appear inside our homes. They have weaseled their way inside, typically through cracks and holes.
First thing you will need to do is inspect the outside of your home of any doorway gaps, cracks in brick or framing, holes where water lines are connected. Any sort of crack or crevice opening a gateway to the inside will need to be addressed to prevent future infestations of your home.
On the inside of your home, check for the same issues. Under the kitchen sink where the pipes connect to the wall, is there a hole or gap? Inside your cabinets, are there any cracks in the walls? Can you see the light underneath your doorway? All of these are potential opportunities for Roaches to make their way inside your home, bringing chaos along with them. Take note of all of the areas you noticed, we will be addressing them later on
Step 2: Extermination
Many people believe that Cockroaches are resilient insects, impossible to remove permanently. Contrary to popular belief, this is not the case.
There are a few simple ways to eliminate the opportunity for them to flourish without touching a chemical. You can start by making sure that you aren’t leaving dirty dishes in the sink overnight, taking out the trash frequently, cleaning up any crumbs that may be on the floor, and if you have a dog, picking up their food bowl so it isn’t left on the ground for easy access.
By doing this, you will remove the opportunity for them to find food. It’s like feeding a stray animal. Feed them once, and they keep coming back for more.
Natural Pest Killers
Household items like Distilled White Vinegar and Citronella Essential Oils , Borax , or an even mixture of Baking Soda and Sugar can be used in places like kitchen cabinets and pantries. These chemicals are non-toxic to us so they won’t harm any foods, but they can be deadly for Roaches' digestive tract.
You will want to make sure that when using powders, you lightly dust the area. Avoid big clumps as this will deter the roaches away and they won’t eat the “poison.”
Eco-Friendly Liquids
Chemicals that are labeled “Green” or Eco-Friendly”, like EcoRadier on Amazon , can be used in your sinks and tubs with a spray bottle.
Roach Bait
Using baits in areas that you see the roaches travel most often is a quick way to eliminate these pests. Bait Gels like Combat Roach Killing Gel provide a food-like smell for the roaches. Once one roach ingests the gel, it will bring it back to the nest giving it to the rest of the roaches. This will cause a domino effect of DEATH.
Step 3: Prevention
Hopefully you haven’t forgotten about those cracks and crevices yet! Once you have taken the necessary measures needed to kill off these pestilent vermin, you’ll need to prevent any more coming back to live rent free.
By using some caulk, make sure to cover each and every crack or crevice, if possible. Roaches are small bugs, and are able to compress their body to fit into tight places. If there is a small crack you're unsure of, it would be best to just fill it in. Chances are, they can fit right through.
